Trade the Earnings Move—Without Picking Direction

BUILT ON PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
The Earnings Strategies of a Professional Money Manager
During more than 30 years in the financial markets, Jeff Beamer has managed hedge funds and mutual funds and developed options strategies for navigating different market conditions. His earnings approach begins with a different question: Is this stock more likely to remain quiet—or make an explosive move? The objective is to select a defined-risk strategy for the stock’s likely behaviour, rather than simply guessing whether its price will rise or fall.
EXPLOSIVE EARNINGS
Profit From a Large Move — Either Up or Down
When a setup suggests that a stock could make an unusually large move, Jeff uses volatility strategies such as straddles and strangles. The opportunity comes from the magnitude of the reaction—not from predicting its direction.
- A large move can be higher or lower
- Direction is not the starting point
- Risk defined before entry
QUIET EARNINGS
Profit When the Stock Stays Within Its Range
For stocks expected to remain relatively quiet, Jeff uses range-based strategies such as iron condors. These trades are designed to benefit when the post-earnings move is smaller than the options market anticipated.
- Defined-risk structure
- Benefits from a little or no move
- Short, planned holding period
